FFI Vietnam Conservation Support Programme is recruiting for two positions to lead and implement field conservation activities to protect Vietnam’s endangered gibbons
Background
• FFI’s mission is to conserve threatened species and ecosystems world-wide, choosing solutions that are sustainable, are based on sound science and take account of human needs. FFI’s strategy to achieve this mission is to work with in-country organisations at all levels to support them in identifying and implementing country-led sustainable solutions.
• The FFI Vietnam Programme has its headquarters in Hanoi, and is working to support conservation initiatives in Quang Binh, Hoang Lien Mountains, Cuc Phuong – Pu Luong Limestone Range, Ha Long Bay, Ha Giang and Cao Bang. The Country Programme is currently implemented by a team of approximately 30 staff.
• The primate programme targets the conservation of Vietnam’s endangered primates, in particular the Critically Endangered Eastern and Western Black Crested Gibbons and Tonkin Snub-nosed Monkey with site-based primate conservation projects that have demonstrated success to date. The programme is developing its gibbon conservation activities to strengthen monitoring at current project sites and expand its gibbon conservation activities to replicate its success at other sites.
Timeframe:
11 months from mid-February with the possibility for extension
Senior gibbon biologist
Roles and responsibilities
• Work closely with the Vietnam primate programme coordinator to ensure that field activities are able to demonstrate successful gibbon conservation outcomes in accordance with FFI’s mission statement
• Support FFI develop its strategy for gibbon conservation in Vietnam.
• Develop overall project workplans and specific plans for field activities and prepare and manage associated budgets
• Plan and lead gibbon censuses and surveys.
• Supervise junior gibbon biologist and provide training where required.
• Identify broader conservation threats and needs to meet conservation goals at programmatic and site-level.
• Provide training on ecology, conservation and surveying gibbons and related areas where required.
• Develop and strengthen gibbon monitoring programmes in the field.
• Support and advise established local partners at project sites on planning for species-focussed conservation management.
• Support FFI to develop and establish new partnerships where required to support FFI’s conservation goals.
• Ensure field methods follow a rigorous and appropriate scientific methodology
• Prepare reports on field activities carried out through this position and review draft reports by other authors on related primate programme activities and ensure that all reporting related to the position meets a high standard.
Qualifications and expected requirements
• Masters degree in biology, ecology or forestry
• At least 5 years experience conducting field related work
• Demonstrated knowledge and field experience of primate ecology and particularly gibbons
• Vietnamese national
• Good written and spoken English
• Able to show initiative and to develop ideas independently
• Demonstrated good experience in working closely with government agencies at provincial level and in remote areas
• Good team spirit and leadership skills
• Experience and willingness in working in remote forest areas
• Enthusiasm for wildlife conservation
• Computer literacy
Junior gibbon biologist
Roles and responsibilities
• Support the senior gibbon biologist where required to meet the field conservation goals of the primate programme related to primates and especially gibbons.
• Support carry out and where required lead gibbon censuses and surveys.
• Support provide training to local partners and other project participants.
• Support the senior gibbon biologist meet his/her reporting requirements for field activities in which the junior biologist has participated.
• Monitor gibbon monitoring programmes and provide training in the field to local partners implementing monitoring programmes.
• Provide logistical support for carrying out field activities.
Qualifications and expected requirements
• Bachelors degree in biology, ecology or forestry
• At least 2 years experience conducting field related work
• Knowledge and field experience of primate ecology and particularly gibbons
• Vietnamese national
• Good written and spoken English
• Good team spirit
• Experience and willingness in working in remote forest areas
• Enthusiasm for wildlife conservation
• Computer literacy
